After selecting books from our collection that told stories about famous women in law, we researched a timeline. We chose firsts from New York State and on a national level to narrow our focus a bit. With small captions and photos of the women found on the internet we created our Women in Law Timeline. Yea, we've come a long way baby.

1855 Elizabeth Cady Stanton makes an unprecedented appearance before the New York State Legislature to speak in favor of expanding the Married Woman's Property Law.

1866 The American Equal Rights Association is founded with the purpose to secure for all Americans their civil rights irrespective of race, color, or sex. Lucretia Mott is elected president. To test women's constitutional right to hold public office, Stanton runs for Congress receiving 24 of 12,000 votes cast.

1869 Arabella Mansfield is granted admission to practice law in Iowa, making her the first woman lawyer. A year later, Ada H. Kepley, of Illinois, graduates from the Union College of Law in Chicago. She is the first woman lawyer to graduate from a law school.

1872 Victoria Claflin Woodhull becomes the first woman presidential candidate in the United States when she is nominated by the National Radical Reformers.

1873 Bradwell v. Illinois, 83 U.S. 130 (1872): The U.S. Supreme Court rules that a state has the right to exclude a married woman (Myra Colby Bradwell) from practicing law.

1879 Through special Congressional legislation, Belva Lockwood becomes first woman admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court.

1886 Kate Stoneman was the first woman admitted to practice law in New York. Even though she passed the New York State Bar Exam, her application to join the bar was rejected because of her gender. She then launched a successful campaign to amend the Code of Civil Procedure to permit the admission of qualified applicants without regard to sex or race.

1887 Susanna Medora Salter becomes the first woman elected mayor of an American town, in Argonia, Kansas.

1893 Antoinette Dakin Leach was the first woman to challenge a bar admission denial based on gender to the Indiana Supreme Court

1916 Jeannette Rankin, a Republican from Montana, is elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and becomes the first woman to serve in Congress.

1919 In New York State, two women were elected to the Assembly. Republican Ida Sammis, a well known suffrage leader and supporter of prohibition, ran for the Assembly seat representing Suffolk County in 1918. Her Democratic counterpart in the 1918 election was Mary Lilly from New York County. Lilly was a graduate of the New York University School of Law, the first women to win a scholarship in a competitive exam, and the first woman admitted to practice law in New York. These two women only served one term, but they began a long tradition of women legislators in the state.

1920 Marguerite Smith, a Republican from New York County, is elected to the Assembly at 25, she was the youngest woman ever elected to the Assembly.

1922 Rebecca Felton, of Georgia, is appointed to the U.S. Senate to fill a temporary vacancy. The first woman senator, she serves for only two days.

1924-1948 The first women to be elected to both houses of New York State government and a native of St. Lawrence County, Rhoda Fox Graves, served for several terms. A Republican, she was elected to the New York State Assembly in 1924 and served there until 1932. She was unsuccessful in her first bid to gain a seat in the New York State Senate, but won in 1934 and served for 14 years in the Senate, retiring in 1948.

1925 Nellie Tayloe Ross becomes the first woman to serve as governor of a state, in Wyoming. In the fall of 1924 she was elected to succeed her deceased husband, William Bradford Ross. Miriam Amanda "Ma" Ferguson is inaugurated governor of Texas days later.

1932 Hattie Wyatt Caraway, of Arkansas, becomes the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate.

1933 Frances Perkins is appointed Secretary of Labor by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, making her the first woman member of a presidential cabinet.

1942 The government reclassified 55% of their jobs, allowing women and blacks to fill them. First, single women were actively recruited to the workforce. In 1943, with virtually all the single women employed, married women were allowed to work.

1946 Eleanor Roosevelt is elected as head of the United Nations Human Rights Commission; She begins to draft the Declaration of Human Rights and initiates the creation of Americans for Democratic Action, a group which focuses on domestic social reform and resistance against Russia and the developing Cold War.

1948 -1953 Playwright Clare Boothe Luce, former member of Congress (1943-47), was appointed Ambassador to Italy, the first woman to represent the U.S. in a major diplomatic office.

1954 Martha Griffiths became the first Democratic woman to represent Michigan in Congress.

1955 Rosa Parks refuses to give up her seat on a public bus in Montgomery, Alabama.

1960 Oveta Culp Hobby becomes the first woman to serve as Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare. She is also the first director of the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC), and the first woman to receive the U.S. Army Distinguished Service Medal.

1964 Margaret Chase Smith, of Maine, becomes the first woman nominated for president of the United States by a major political party, at the Republican National Convention in San Francisco.

1965 Patsy Takemoto Mink, of Hawaii, is the first Asian-American woman elected to Congress. She served in the U.S. House of Representatives for 24 years.

1969 Shirley Chisholm, of New York, becomes the first African-American woman in Congress. Her motto is, "Unbought and unbossed." She served in the U.S. House of Representatives for 14 years.

1972 Shirley Chisholm is first black American to run for president.

1974 Ella Grasso of Connecticut becomes the first woman Governor elected in her own right.

1981 Sandra Day O'Connor is appointed by President Reagan to the Supreme Court, making her its first woman justice.

1984 Geraldine Ferraro is the first woman to run for vice-president on a major party ticket.

1989 Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, of Florida, becomes the first Hispanic woman elected to congress. She serves in the U.S. House of Representatives.

1990 Dr. Antonia Novello is sworn in as U.S. Surgeon General, becoming the first woman and first Hispanic to hold that job.

1991 On January 2, Sharon Pratt Dixon is sworn in as mayor of Washington, DC, becoming the first black woman to serve as mayor of a major city.

1992 Carol Moseley-Braun, of Illinois, becomes the first African-American woman elected to the U.S. Senate.

1993 Janet Reno becomes the first woman U.S. attorney general.

1997 Madeleine Albright is sworn in as U.S. secretary of state. She is the first woman in this position as well as the highest-ranking woman in the United States government.

1998 Hon. Johnnie Rawlinson is the first female U.S. District Court Judge

2000 Hillary Clinton is elected to the U.S. Senate, becoming the first First Lady ever elected to national office.

2005 Condoleeza Rice becomes the first African-American female Secretary of State.

2007 Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) becomes the first woman Speaker of the House of Representatives.

2008 Hillary Clinton wins the New Hampshire Democratic presidential primary, becoming the first woman in U.S. history to win a presidential primary contest.
Sarah Palin, governor of Alaska, becomes the first woman to run for vice president on the Republican ticket.

October 2011 United Nations Month

The United Nations Display for 2011 highlighted three United Nations databases.ODS, the Official Documents System, UN-I-que and Unbisnet.

ODS is the repository of official UN Documents all in full text, PDF, and in six official languages.

UN-I-que, is a ready reference file. The database provides quick access to the symbols and sales numbers of selected UN materials from 1946-to the present.

Unbisnet, is the primary on-line catalog to United Nations documentation published since 1979 and earlier for selected major documents.

September Banned Books and 9/11

Seems like an odd combination but the PDL's won't pass up a suggestion for a display and since the 10th anniversary of 9-11 coincided with our favorite display month we shared the spaces. The table had caution signs and gates around seemingly harmless titles but the bulletin board told another story. It wasn't our first opportunity to drag out a old wooden display case from St John's original campus in Brooklyn but the 1st time we used it this way. Proudly standing in front of the bulletin board it held titles on the subject of 9-11 while behind it hung quotes from history printed in .28 size font. Interesting how quotes from the past were just as fitting as quotes from 2001.

New titles! Our yearly monograph month display is all new aquisitions and is our way to advertise them. Slogans such as " Legal Research is more than just Lexis and Westlaw" and " Writing a paper? Check out these monographs" are our standard catchphrase signs each year. Because the titles change every year, no need to switch much ....

For the 2011 display of New York State Documents we tried to be a little creative. We wanted to highlight specific Archival Collections available at the New York State Library in Albany. The library collections include manuscripts, rare books, maps and atlases, prints and photographs broadsides and posters (a broadside ballads are narrative songs or poems printed on one side of a single sheet of paper), and music scores. Some of the collections included are a Civil War Collection and a collection of Selected Women in History.

Congratulations to the Class of 2011!!!

Tradition has dictated that the PDL's set up a commencement display so when students pick up their diplomas on graduation day in the library they can see old yearbooks and commencement programs. How can we switch this up? Not much, except by posting only last years commencement pictures in the bulletin board.

Paper Dolls!

The PDL's relived a little bit of their childhood cutting these paper doll borders for the bulletin board and table. Except kids wouldn't download and use templates from the Internet, or maybe they would....

We used13x 19 paper to print and cut out the large letters to spell out "family", and had family law phrases all over them.

1948 July 26

Truman signs ExecutiveOrder 9981, which states, "It is hereby declared to be the policy of thePresident that there shall be equality of treatment and opportunity for allpersons in the armed services without regard to race, color, religion, or nationalorigin."

1954 May 17

The Supreme Court rules on the landmarkcase Brownv. Board of Education of Topeka, Kans., unanimously agreeing that segregation inpublic schools is unconstitutional. The ruling paves the way for large-scaledesegregation. The decision overturns the 1896 Plessy v. Fergusonruling that sanctioned "separate but equal" segregation of the races,ruling that "separate educational facilities are inherently unequal."It is a victory for NAACP attorney Thurgood Marshall, who will later returnto the Supreme Court as the nation's first black justice.

1955 Aug.

Fourteen-year-oldChicagoan EmmettTill is visiting family inMississippi when he is kidnapped, brutally beaten, shot, and dumped in theTallahatchie River for allegedly whistling at a white woman. Two white men, J.W. Milam and Roy Bryant, are arrested for the murder and acquitted by anall-white jury. They later boast about committing the murder in a Look magazine interview. Thecase becomes a cause célèbre of the civil rights movement.

Dec. 1

(Montgomery, Ala.) NAACP member Rosa Parks refuses to give up herseat at the front of the "colored section" of a bus to a whitepassenger, defying a southern custom of the time. In response to her arrest theMontgomery black community launches a bus boycott, which will last for morethan a year, until the buses are desegregated Dec. 21, 1956. As newly electedpresident of the Montgomery Improvement Association (MIA), Reverend Martin Luther King,Jr., is instrumental inleading the boycott.

1957 Jan.–Feb.

Martin Luther King, Charles K. Steele, and Fred L. Shuttlesworth establish the SouthernChristian Leadership Conference, of which King is made the first president. TheSCLC becomes a major force in organizing the civil rights movement and basesits principles on nonviolence and civil disobedience. According to King, it isessential that the civil rights movement not sink to the level of the racistsand hatemongers who oppose them: "We must forever conduct our struggle onthe high plane of dignity and discipline," he urges.

Sept.

(Little Rock, Ark.) Formerly all-whiteCentral High School learns that integration is easier said thandone. Nine black students are blocked from entering the school on the orders ofGovernor OrvalFaubus.President Eisenhower sends federal troopsand the National Guard to intervene on behalf of the students, who become knownas the "LittleRock Nine."

1960 Feb. 1

(Greensboro, N.C.) Four black students from North CarolinaAgricultural and Technical College begin a sit-in at a segregated Woolworth'slunch counter. Although they are refused service, they are allowed to stay atthe counter. The event triggers many similar nonviolent protests throughout theSouth. Six months later the original four protesters are served lunch at thesame Woolworth's counter. Student sit-ins would be effective throughout theDeep South in integrating parks, swimming pools, theaters, libraries, and otherpublic facilities.

(Raleigh, N.C.) The Student NonviolentCoordinating Committee (SNCC) is founded at Shaw University, providing young blacks witha place in the civil rights movement. The SNCC later grows into a more radicalorganization, especially under the leadership of StokelyCarmichael(1966–1967).

Over the spring andsummer, student volunteers begin taking bus trips through the South to test outnew laws that prohibit segregation in interstate travel facilities, whichincludes bus and railway stations. Several of the groups of "freedom riders," as they arecalled, are attacked by angry mobs along the way. The program, sponsored by The Congress of RacialEquality(CORE) and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), involves morethan 1,000 volunteers, black and white.

1962 Oct. 1

James Meredith becomes the first blackstudent to enroll at the University of Mississippi. Violence and riotssurrounding the incident cause President Kennedy to send 5,000 federal troops.

1963 April 16

Martin Luther King isarrested and jailed during anti-segregation protests in Birmingham, Ala.; hewrites his seminal "Letter from BirminghamJail," arguing thatindividuals have the moral duty to disobey unjust laws.

During civil rightsprotests in Birmingham, Ala., Commissioner of Public Safety Eugene"Bull" Connor uses fire hoses and police dogs on black demonstrators.These images of brutality, which are televised and published widely, areinstrumental in gaining sympathy for the civil rights movement around theworld.

June 12

(Jackson, Miss.) Mississippi's NAACPfield secretary, 37-year-old Medgar Evers, is murdered outsidehis home. Byron De La Beckwith is tried twice in 1964, both trials resulting inhung juries. Thirty years later he is convicted formurdering Evers.

Aug. 28

(Washington, D.C.) About 200,000 peoplejoin the Marchon Washington. Congregating at the Lincoln Memorial, participantslisten as Martin Luther King delivers his famous "I Have a Dream" speech.

Sept. 15

(Birmingham, Ala.) Four young girls(Denise McNair, Cynthia Wesley, Carole Robertson, and Addie Mae Collins)attending Sunday school are killed when a bombexplodesat the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church, a popular location for civil rightsmeetings. Riots erupt in Birmingham, leading to the deaths of two more blackyouths.

1964 Jan. 23

The 24th Amendmentabolishes the poll tax, which originally had been instituted in 11 southernstates after Reconstruction to make it difficult for poor blacks to vote.

Summer

The Council of FederatedOrganizations (COFO), a network of civil rights groups that includes CORE andSNCC, launches a massive effort to register black voters during what becomesknown as the Freedom Summer. It also sends delegates to the Democratic NationalConventionto protest—and attempt to unseat—the official all-white Mississippi contingent.

July 2

President Johnson signs the Civil Rights Act of1964. The most sweepingcivil rights legislation since Reconstruction, the Civil Rights Act prohibitsdiscrimination of all kinds based on race, color, religion, or national origin.The law also provides the federal government with the powers to enforcedesegregation.

Aug. 4

(Neshoba Country, Miss.)The bodies of threecivil-rights workers—two white, one black—are found in an earthen dam, six weeks intoa federal investigation backed by President Johnson. James E. Chaney, 21;Andrew Goodman, 21; and Michael Schwerner, 24, had been working to registerblack voters in Mississippi, and, on June 21, had gone to investigate theburning of a black church. They were arrested by the police on speedingcharges, incarcerated for several hours, and then released after dark into thehands of the KuKlux Klan,who murdered them.

1965 Feb. 21

(Harlem, N.Y.) Malcolm X, black nationalist andfounder of the Organization of Afro-American Unity, is shot to death. It isbelieved the assailants are members of the Black Muslim faith, which Malcolmhad recently abandoned in favor of orthodox Islam.

March 7

(Selma, Ala.) Blacks begin a marchto Montgomery in support of voting rights but are stopped at the Pettus Bridgeby a police blockade. Fifty marchers are hospitalized after police use teargas, whips, and clubs against them. The incident is dubbed "BloodySunday" by the media. The march is considered the catalyst for pushingthrough the voting rights act five months later.

Aug. 10

Congress passes theVoting Rights Act of 1965, making it easier for Southern blacks to register tovote. Literacy tests, poll taxes, and other such requirements that were used torestrict black voting are made illegal.

Aug. 11–17, 1965

(Watts, Calif.) Race riots erupt in ablack section of Los Angeles.

Sept. 24, 1965

Asserting that civilrights laws alone are not enough to remedy discrimination, PresidentJohnsonissues Executive Order 11246, which enforces affirmative action for the firsttime. It requires government contractors to "take affirmative action"toward prospective minority employees in all aspects of hiring and employment.

1966 Oct.

(Oakland, Calif.) The militant Black Panthers are founded by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale.

1967 April 19

StokelyCarmichael,a leader of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), coins thephrase "black power" in a speech in Seattle. He defines it as anassertion of black pride and "the coming together of black people to fightfor their liberation by any means necessary." The term's radicalism alarmsmany who believe the civil rights movement's effectiveness and moral authoritycrucially depend on nonviolent civil disobedience.

June 12

In Loving v. Virginia, the Supreme Courtrules that prohibiting interracial marriage is unconstitutional. Sixteen statesthat still banned interracial marriage at the time are forced to revise theirlaws.

July

Major race riots takeplace in Newark (July 12–16) and Detroit (July 23–30).

1968 April 4

(Memphis, Tenn.) Martin Luther King, atage 39, is shot as he stands on the balcony outside his hotel room. Escapedconvict and committed racist James Earl Ray is convicted of thecrime.

President Johnson signs the Civil Rights Act of1968, prohibitingdiscrimination in the sale, rental, and financing of housing.

1971 April 20

The Supreme Court, in Swannv. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education, upholds busing as alegitimate means for achieving integration of public schools.Although largely unwelcome (and sometimes violently opposed) in local schooldistricts, court-ordered busing plans in cities such as Charlotte, Boston, andDenver continue until the late 1990s.

1988 March 22

Overriding President Reagan's veto, Congress passesthe Civil Rights Restoration Act, which expands the reach of non-discriminationlaws within private institutions receiving federal funds.

1991 Nov. 22

After two years ofdebates, vetoes, and threatened vetoes, President Bush reverses himself andsigns the Civil Rights Act of 1991, strengthening existing civil rights lawsand providing for damages in cases of intentional employment discrimination.

1992 April 29

(Los Angeles, Calif.) The first race riotsin decades erupt in south-central Los Angeles after a jury acquits four whitepolice officers for the videotaped beating of African American Rodney King.

2003 June 23

In the most importantaffirmative action decision since the 1978 Bakke case, the Supreme Court(5–4) upholds the University of Michigan Law School's policy, ruling that racecan be one of many factors considered by colleges when selecting their studentsbecause it furthers "a compelling interest in obtaining the educationalbenefits that flow from a diverse student body."

The ringleader of the Mississippi civilrights murders (see Aug.4, 1964),EdgarRay Killen,is convicted of manslaughter on the 41st anniversary of the crimes.

Rosa Parks dies at age92.

Coretta Scott King diesof a stroke at age 78.

Emmett Till's 1955murder case, reopened by the Department of Justice in 2004, is officiallyclosed. The two confessed murderers, J. W. Milam and Roy Bryant, were dead ofcancer by 1994, and prosecutors lacked sufficient evidence to pursue furtherconvictions.

James Bonard Fowler, aformer state trooper, is indicted for the murder of Jimmie Lee Jackson 40 yearsafter Jackson's death. The 1965 killing lead to a series of historic civilrights protests in Selma, Ala.

January

SenatorEdward Kennedy (D-MA) introduces the Civil Rights Act of 2008. Some of theproposed provisions include ensuring that federal funds are not used tosubsidize discrimination, holding employers accountable for age discrimination,and improving accountability for other violations of civil rights and workers'rights.

2009 January

In the Supreme Courtcase Ricci v. DeStefano, a lawsuit brought against the city of NewHaven, 18 plaintiffs—17 white people and one Hispanic—argued that results ofthe 2003 lieutenant and captain exams were thrown out when it was determinedthat few minority firefighters qualified for advancement. The city claimed theythrew out the results because they feared liability under a disparate-impactstatute for issuing tests that discriminated against minority firefighters. Theplaintiffs claimed that they were victims of reverse discrimination under the TitleVII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The Supreme Court ruled (5–4) in favor ofthe firefighters, saying New Haven's "action in discarding the tests was aviolation of Title VII."

Inspired by this topic, her department created this display for our yearly United Nations display that focused on the Declaration of Human Rights and Human rights issues. The Bulletin Board displays the Declaration of Human Rights and the table has items from our collection that pertain to Human Rights and Human Rights issues.

Using the list of Banned books from ALA we displayed personal copies of books that have been challenged or banned. We used pockets to hide a story of the banning or challenge and decorated slips with a cutout of a banned stamp.

This month we decided on an interactive display . It was as easy as a u tube account and a playlist, played on a loop. We also made our own power point and added it to the list.

We printed off this clip art for our border on the bulletin board and added a rolled up page tied in red ribbon.

This display doesn't change much from year to year. We print the photos from the past years commencement so the pictures are actually from 2009. We change the banner and the rest is easy, we dig out old yearbooks and programs from our Archives and grab a graduation robe from the commencement committee. If your thinking of a display that is fast, easy and cheap, this one is for you.

Five Reasons Why Librarians are Better than Google

1. Google locates only web sites, while librarians find all types of resources in any format.
2. Google requires you to design your own searches, but librarians help you plan an effective search strategy.
3. Google leaves it up to you to sort through the mountain of results, while librarians assist you in selecting information to meet your specific needs.
4. Google provides no quality control, but librarians always have a Plan B if your search yields no results.
5. Google is an inanimate web site with no ability to offer moral support, but librarians are real people who can dispense things like encouragement, high fives and even hugs.

Civil Rights

The books we used outline historical figures and landmark events in the course of the civil rights movement. Presidents, court justices, cultural icons, and ordinary people who made a difference are all highlighted in this handful of books from our Civil Rights Collection.

The Ronald H. Brown Civil Rights Collection was started with a gift from Mrs. Mary E. Thompson in memory of her late husband, Dr. Leroy B. Thompson, an ardent supporter of civil rights. Ron Brown, an SJU alumnus (LLB 1970), was Secretary of Commerce (1993-1996) in the Clinton Administration.

The collection includes books, videos, microforms, and other materials on the African-American civil rights movement, affirmative action, segregation, voting rights, biographies, and archival materials from the files of the ACLU.

A little research found that poppys are a symbol associated with veterans.

Our yearly Commencement display was once again met with enthusiasim.
Rittenbird even got into the spirit with his very own diploma.

We put out yearbooks and commencment programs and photos from the previous years commencement ceremonies on the bulletin board.

We even have a robe and hood that our students wear. Guess what's underneath? A tripod and some tissue paper. Who needs Manny Quinn?

April 2009 Combination display Earth Day & National Library Week

National Library Week falls in April, so does Earth Day. So when the Environmental Law Society asked if we could have an Earth Day Display the PDL's were thrilled because the students are paying attention to our displays and confused because, how do you have both topics? Well thanks ALA campaign Worlds Connect @ your Library our problems were solved!

As you can see first we placed our tables in the shape of a 'T' . Then we decorated each table as it's own display .

An old atlas destined for the dumpster provided the Earth Day table with a banner, and cardboard was used as backgrounds for green ideas, history of Earth Day and an Earth Day Proclamation.

All printed on recycled paper. We created Earth Day posters with pictures of earths , rainforests , mountains and sunsets.

For National Library Week we used ALA's logo for a banner , and decorated the table with mini globes. The books were all related to the careers of library and information science professionals.

The Federal Tax display gave an overview of the Federal Tax System and the importance of the information available to all consumers on-line. The bulletin board decorated in red and blue highlighted the URL's with additional information about specific websites.

It was time once again for our annual Civil Rights display. We chose our best dressed books from the collection and bordered the table with the US Constitution. Our bulletin board also hosted our Civil Rights timeline. The Rittenberg Law Library has a special collection called The Ron Brown Civil Rights Collection. Ronald H. Brown was a St. John’s law school alumnus, who served as the first African American Secretary of Commerce and the first African American Chair of the Democratic National Committee.

The Ron Brown Center also publishes a newsletter, and maintains a database called Race & Media Diversity. At the Law School it was announced that The Journal of Legal Commentary has become the Official Publication of the Ronald H. Brown Center for Civil Rights and Economic Development .

"The St. John's Journal of Legal Commentary ("JLC") has been a journal of general legal significance for twenty-two years. Over the years, JLC has enjoyed publishing articles on a wide array of legal topics and concerns. Recently, the journal has made the decision to adopt a more exacting focus on contemporary legal issues.
That is why JLC is pleased to announce that it has become the official publication of the Ronald H. Brown Center for Civil Rights and Economic Development. The Ronald H. Brown Center’s mission is to engage in legal studies, research and outreach focusing on issues that affect the lives of underrepresented people while simultaneously educating law students to be leaders on issues of racial, economic and social justice.
Thus, in the future, JLC will focus its articles on the broad topics of racial, economic and social justice. JLC looks forward to working with inaugural Director of the Ronald H. Faces of Liberty travelling display January 2009

The New York Civil Liberties Union has a travelling display. The Rittenberg Law Library was proud to host this display in January.

From the (New York Civil Liberties Union) NYCLU website :

The "Faces of Liberty display is about the Bill of Rights, civil liberties and New Yorkers. An educational project of the New York Civil Liberties Foundation and its Nassau Chapter, Faces of Liberty is a travelling photo-journal display of black-and-white photographs and accompanying text that puts human faces on what often can be complex civil liberties issues. The exhibits document 22 stories of men and women, boys and girls, who have stood up for their beliefs often in the face of great adversity. These are people who, in defense of their civil liberties, have been helped by the NYCLU" http://www.nyclu.org/node/2017

We moved our tables once again away from center stage (by that we mean we moved them from the center of the floor) and replaced them with easels. Some where double easels and we also had wooden easels that held only one photograph. The double easels really stood out and the PDL's wished we had more of them.

As it was we had to beg borrow and steal ( well not really steal ) to get enough for the display.

The PDL's once again put their creativity to work and found places on the 1st floor to hang the photos, we put them in alcoves and on tables also. When we used our tables to display the photographs we draped them in tablecloths and that really drew attention to the photographs. The material was white so the black and white photographs really stood out. The press release and the informative flyer provided by the NYCLU were also displayed on these tables. Because we displayed the photographs all around the first floor of the library we decided to put information on our bulletin board about the NYCLU from their website.

The PDL's have 2 tables that take center stage on the 1st floor of the library.

This month we separated them and had 2 displays!

One was moved to sit horizontally and had a banner that read Address the Stress. On the table were games, puzzles, toys and a book titled , Ivy Briefs : True Tales of a Neurotic Law Student / Martha Kimes.KF373 .bK473 A3 2007

One of the staff members had a great idea to have a crossword puzzle and sudoko that were related to our display and we even had prizes from Lexis for completing the crossword puzzle or a sudoko. This table was inspired by a similar one at the University of Texas and the Trexler Library at Muhlenberg College.

The table also had cards, a jigsaw puzzle, Uno, checkers, chess and dominos.

The theme for our second display was Animal Rights. Our table not only featured books on the subject but some fine examples of animals. First & foremost our very own mascot; Rittenbird. He even dressed up for the occasion. And for those of you who attended AALL in San Antionio you may remeber the armadillio . Armadillios remind the PDL's of the book A Prayer for Owen Meany and the subsequent movie Simon Birch. There was also a moose sporting his Lexis t-shirt ,a teddy bear with his Westlaw vest and our holiday friends a bunny and a turkey. The bulletin board featured pictures of animals in poor conditions with quotes about Animal Rights .

It's Back!

Well sort of ... today a brand new bulletin board was delivered and hung on the same spot where our old one vanished from some time ago. The reason for the vanishing act is the bulletin board was going to be replaced by artwork. The PDL's were thrilled to learn the art was relocated to a different area in the law building and a spanking new board with gliding doors and crystal clear glass was purchased and hung. Although the December display was not ready yet, the PDL's rushed to fill it with background paper and border. The old board is still in no mans land beside copiers and restrooms and will now house book jackets of newly purchased books. It will be a rotating exhibit based on the aquisitions of the library. That could mean a new display every week!

Voting Rights 2008

It is Election Year! well ..a presidential one anyway, so we thought it was a good time to display books and a timeline on voting rights .

On the bulletin board (now in a new location) we tried something different, a time line posted vertically rather than horizontally. What do you think? Does it work better?

Our new patriotic looking border lined the table and there were so many good titles with out proper dress we decided to place books in the middle of the table in book shelf style. The spines looked good! Don't you think?

Yes they took our bulletin board.. well ...they moved it into an alcove enroute to the restroom to share space with copiers. Who will see it? students with radiant light shining upon them and people with bathroom facilities on their mind.

But the PDL's are not to be discouraged, we stapled and posted in our usual fashion and it looks as good as ever.

When we are asked about the board we send them to the darkened alcove to admire our work . Is our bulletin board doomed ? Will it lose it's popular status? Stay tuned.....

Banned Books 2008

Banned Books Week is September 27–October 4, 2008

PDL's always celebrate all month . This year we changed things up a bit to keep it fresh, it is still one of the PDL's favorite displays/holidays . PDL's will wear a read banned books button all month. We have finally aquired Crime Scene tape , slightly used, which makes it all look really authentic.

We were inspired by this picture and made our bulletin board in a similar fashion. We printed book jackets and posted them on black paper for a dramatic effect and used crime scene, caution and authorized personel only tape. We used a stapler to post as many books jackets as would fit.

Our table was wrapped in yellow tape and all the titles that have been banned or challeged were put on the table facedown to represent censorship. We had plastic holders for banned book lists, stories, articles and there was even a few on Palin who has been in the news lately over banned books and libraries. Read more here.

So this year we didnt stop at the table & the bulletin board. We put mini posters all over the library and even got Rittenbird ( our mascot) involved in it.

We moved some handouts to another area and used this rotating holder too.

And of course we put out the Library Bill of Rights available on the American Library Associations website.

Commencement Display 2008

Our popular commencment display of last year is now a tradition. Because the diplomas are handed out in the library immediatly following the commencement ceremony our tables must take a new center stage. We leave them that way all month. Books for this display are just old yearbooks and commencment programs. Our yearbook collection goes back to the 1940's so we use 2 books chosen at random from each decade. Our commencement program collection is very small and we just have the past 5 years. However our website always has lots of pictures from the previous years commencement festivities. We print them to adorn our bulletin board.

How we got started .....

In October, 2005 the United Nations celebrated its 60th anniversary and the United Nations asked that all depositories celebrate the occasion. Because of this celebration and a chance to display some of our United Nations materials the library decided to place two tables to take center stage at the entrance of the library .

The tables arrived in the begining of August and so began monthly rotations of library materials on display.

The library also had a glass enclosed bulletin board at the entrance to the library that had the same display for far to long, long enough that the titles weren't new any more so we decided that we would add the bulletin board as part of our monthly display .

How to choose a book for a display

A book for a display should :

1- match your topic or theme

2-have a colorful cover

3- have a cover that includes a photo or drawing

4- not be damaged or brittle

5- be able to stand on it's bottom

6- be on a bookstand

7- have a cardboard placed behind it to keep it from curling if it is a phamplet, magazine or soft cover

8- have it's original bookjacket

9- have the title on the spine

10- belong to the library or staff of the library

Let me count the ways PDL's make these things happen

1- keep a file of all book jackets arranged generally by subject, for example immigration law, international law, civil rights etc.

2- pull all the books on a paticular subject that we have a book jacket for and 'recover' them

3- once we establish the topic for the display we go to that section in the library and browse for 'good ' covers and other material for the display

4- solicit donations of personally owned banned books

5- search our topic in the catalog by subject

6- put most of our books on book stands

7- place cardboard usually size 81/2 by 11 behind books that tend to curl

8- put skinny phamplets or one sheet material in a plastic sign holder

9- place other books directly on the table slightly open and fanned to showcase it's poignet or colorful spine or front cover

10- place books flat on their backs if the are too thick to support themselves up right

These are our suggestions from experience and by trial & error. Any other ideas or suggestions ? We'd love to hear from you!

Crimes & Criminal Law May 2008

Book jackets are so hard to come by the PDL's had to come up with a new idea. So we printed the jacket art and attached it to a book that has seen better days.

But this book was important to our topic this month, Crimes and Criminal law.

Our Bulletin Board had a time line of Crimes of the Century inspired by Time Magazine.

Our banner was made up with fonts that look like old time ransom letters and we surrounded the table with the Lady of Justice.

Lincoln Display

Last year we kept the Civil Rights display up for both January and
Feburary because when we took it down January 31 the year before , everyone said we should have had the Civil Rights display and collection out for Black History Month, so we listened and it was a great success. However, this year we had all intentions of doing the same thing we even advertised it in the newsletter. But when the new jurist in residence program was about to begin it was suggested that we have a display on Abraham Lincoln, and being the clever PDL' s that we are we decided "Ok we can do this!" so the PDL's came up with a new and exciting display. In addition to our book display and our posters we set up a TV and played The Lincoln section from "Mandate The President and the People. http://www.thirteen.org/pressroom/release.php?get=1456We had to come up with a way to show the movie and not distract the cliental that were studying. By moving furniture and setting up a veiwing area we changed the look of the first floor and avoided any problems. The theory was to give them no other choice for seating so they would sit there. Didnt work, but we have gotten lots of favorable coments on the video. First we played the Lincoln section on a loop. By day three we played the whole DVD, with subtitle function on , because of course it is a library.

And we left the Civl Rights timeline in the bulletin board because it is Black History Month but you saw that already.

Civil Rights Month 2008

The Rittenberg Law Library has a special collection on Civil Rights.

Each year we showcase it in January, Feburary or both months because we want it to coincide with Black History Month and Martin Luther King Day.

So it seemed appropriate, given our location (we are a New York Law School and library located in Queens) that we have a display on Immigration Law. We decided on the month of December and if you look carefully in the picture below you can find our cardboard fireplace that was part of our holiday decor. Don't let me wander, back to the topic ...so we pulled lots of good loooking books on Immigration Law, printed some maps and pictures of Ellis Island for the table and began putting up the display.
For those of you not familiar with New York you may not know that we are home to Ellis Island , the Gateway to America, it is located near the southern tip of Manhattan Island where almost 1/2 of U.S. immigrants can trace their ancestery to the many immigrants who passed through the island from 1892-1924, PDL's included. The Ellis Island foundation website was a great source of inspiration for this display so you may want to check out the website

To mark World Poverty Day the United Nations display for 2007 was based on the slogan "STAND UP Against Poverty, Stand Up For the Millennium Development Goals" We set up display tables and a bulletin board stating the goals which were:

Goal 1- Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger

Reduce by half the porportion of people living on less than a dollar a day

Reduce by half the proportion of people who suffer from hunger

Goal 2- Achieve universal primary education

Goal 3- Promote gender equality and empower women

Eliminate gender dispartiy in primary and secondary educations preferably by 2005, and at all levels by 2015

Goal 4- Promote child mortality

Reduce by two thirds the mortality rate among children under five

Goal 5- Improve maternal health

Reduce by three quarters the maternal mortality ratio

Goal 6- Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases

Halt and begin to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS

Halt and begin to reverse the incidence of malaria and other major diseases

Goal 7- Ensure environmental sustainability

Integrate the principles of sustainable development into country policies

and programmes; reverse loss of environmental resources

Reduce by half the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe
drinking water

Achieve significant improvement in lives of at least 100 milllion slum dwellers, by 2020

Goal 7- Develop a global partnership for development

Constitution Day Bulletin Board 2007

In conjunction with the Banned Books display we had a bulletin board display about Constitution Day.

In 2005 the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2005 Pub. L. 108-447 mandated that " the civil and educational authorities of States, counties, cities, and towns are urged to make plans for the proper observance of Constitution Day and Citizenship Day and for the complete instruction of citizens in their responsibilities and opportunities as citizens of the United States and of the State and locality in which they reside."

This year the Law School sponsored a symposium about Election Day. The PDL's , not wanting to take away from the posters positioned in front of the library advertising the event, opted for a simple Constitution display.

Our Banned Books display always contains books donated by the library staff. Our collection contains titles on censorship and book banning but we don't collect books from the banned list, except dictionaries, encylopedias, and theogical texts such as the Bible and the Koran. These titles are decorated with a warning sign and a story about where and when it was banned or challenged. The stories are published on

The New York State Document Depository Program was created in 1818, and the New York State Library has been the repository of official State publications of the Legislative, Executive, and Judicial branches, commissions, public authorities, and other agencies of State Government. In January 1989 the State Library established a redesigned Depository Program to make the New York State documents the library receives easily available to anyone who is interested in reading, researching or just browsing the collection.
